The Benefits of Supplements

Even people who are very careful to only eat the healthiest foods can benefit from a daily multivitamin. Various regions have different selections of fruits and vegetables. Additionally, the soils in various regions may be missing key nutrients that help the local fruits and vegetables supply all of your nutritional needs. In many cases, just having a daily multivitamin will fill in whatever nutrient you may lack from the local produce, without you having to go out and do local nutrient studies to figure out specifically which vitamin deficiencies may exist in your area.

There are nutritionists and doctors who suggest that if you are eating a broad, balanced diet, you will get all of the nutrients you need. However, while this may be true in certain regions with very healthy soils and a lot of importing of a variety of fruits and vegetables, the scientific evidence is beginning to show that people in many regions are not getting all of the nutrients they need from the natural foods they eat.

Supplements can help make up for a variety of common deficiencies. Also, many people do not recognize that when we face stress in our daily lives we may be in more need of supplements. Pollution is another problem that requires our bodies to have a full range of antioxidants such as those found in supplements. Magnesium, selenium, chromium, and molybdenum are common deficiencies. Most multivitamins contain all or most of these in sufficient quantities to help your body maintain good health.

In most cases, a daily multivitamin will do no harm. If you are on any medications, you should consult with your doctor before taking a multivitamin. If you are not on medications, it should be noted that in most cases a vitamin deficiency can do much more harm than a multivitamin. However, you don't need to go overboard and get megavitamins, which may be much riskier and block your body from properly using all of the nutrients it has.
